There are two versions of the HeartMate Left Ventricular Assist System (LVAS): the Vented Electric (XVE) LVAD, which is powered by wearable batteries that allow the patient to be mobile, and the Implantable Pneumatic (IP), which is powered by an external Drive Console. Both devices are fully implanted alongside the native heart and are designed to assist the pumping function of the heart's left ventricle.
